Hi Thomas,
Just for stability. The same reason why I use multible verbindung pieces. The stability must be as high as possible to predict it's straight way. I have seen already that the two motors have to be compensated with a algorithm.
I am constantly measuring the left and right side of the vehicle. The 'speed' variables of the left and right motor are constantly adjusted in order to have a straight line, or stear as good as possible.
So my anwser is Stability!
